Sustainability

Since its creation Roteiros de Charme seeks to develop hotel activity in order to minimize environmental impacts. In tune with the development of concepts and models that points towards sustainability of tourism activity, the Association establishes firm position so their associates act as actors in their regions encouraging, supporting, promoting actions that go beyond simple offer of quality accommodation. Each associated of Roteiros takes up the mission to develop their activities with high social and environmental responsibility towards respective tourism destinations, approaching the ideal model of tourism known as geotourism.

The geoturismo concept was launched by the National Geographic Traveller as “the tourism that supports or increases the geographic character of a tourist destination: its environment, landscape, historic and cultural heritage, and the wellbeing of the resident population”. This concept, used informally since 1997 entered definitively in the international tourism scenery through a study sponsored by the National Geographic Society in 2002.

The attributes of flora, fauna, landscape, architecture, dance, music, gastronomy, arts and how this is experienced by the local population to give the destination its geographical character in a vast way, something similar to a "geographical identity". The tourist activity capable of sustaining and increasing the geographic character of its destination should therefore encourage the growth of the local economy in order to improve the well being of the resident population without degrading its identity, its cultural diversity

The Sustainability Program of Roteiros de Charme born under the inspiration of its Ethics and Environmental Code of Conduct, is lined up with the required efforts so that if it is taken ahead the ideal of the geoturismo in each tourist destination. Besides good practice on energy and water conservation, reduction and recycling of solid waste, responsible management of effluent and emissions in the installations of the hospitality, the associates of The Roteiros commit themselves in interacting with its hosting communities through countless numbers of ways of engagement, supporting initiatives of local actors who can strengthen all the aspects of its “geographic identity”.

Beyond charm, inherent to its proposal of hospitality, the Roteiros associated hotels act as protagonists aiming to construct sustainability of the tourist destinations where if they locate.
