Pernambuco
Land of the frevo rhythm and mamulengo puppets, Pernambuco combines the new and the historic in perfect harmony. Recife, crossed by the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers, was founded in 1535; and declared a Natural and Cultural World Heritage in 1982. The colonial houses of Olinda are home to the liveliest street carnival in Brazil. Nearby, Jaboatão was the stage, in the 17th century, of the Battle of Guararapes, which brought an end to Dutch rule in the region.
